The last phase of my project was, of course, the compilation of results and data into this paper. In doing this I found that it was helpful to divide the paper into three major sections: physiology, exercise and recreation, in that order. Some general knowledge of the physiology of old age must be known before exercise and recreation may be intelligibly discussed. I also found that knowing some of the physiology of old age permitted one to hypothesize some recreational activities which might be physically helpful. It also often helped to explain the successes of tested programs. The next step up from physiology is exercise. Knowing what to expect physically from older people is a necessary prerequisite for a sound recreational program. Finally, recreation itself is discussed. There are a great many ideas for recreational activities; only a few are presented here. But even these few demonstrate the central role that the use of leisure time has in producing successful aging. |
