Title The design of a help system for a CAI program
Date 1986-06
Year graduated 1986
Description This report describes the design of an on-line user "help" interface for a Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) software project. The Computer Based Software Educational System (CBESS), currently under development at the University of Utah for the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center, is a menu-based CAI program to be used by the Navy to instruct its personnel in a wide variety of subjects. Since it is generally recognized that an important feature of userfriendly computer software is an effective help system [Fenchel 82a, Hayes 82], and since CBESS currently lacks such a system, work was undertaken to design one. This paper discusses the results of this design work, including the issues involved in the development of a help system for CBESS, the proposed system itself and a help data structure integrable into the existing CBESS framework.
