Description A VG-7070F mass spectrometer was modified to perform collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions by the addition of a collision chamber and a second-stage mass analyzer. The VG instrument provided the ion source, magnetic mass selector, and the reference high voltage along with its own support equipment. The detector on the VG was removed and the interface with the chamber added. The chamber consists of a deceleration lens, a supersonic neutral beam, a sphericEl energy analyzer, and a quadrupole mass filter with ion detection equipment. The vacuum components and the chamber materials were selected from commercial sources; and fabricated in the machine shop at the University of Utah. The essential parts for the chamber were designed and the drawings delivered to the machine shop along with recommendations for the construction materials.
