T H E U TA H E X P E R I E N C E A er seven years as assistant coach, Roeland Brateanu steps into the head coach posi on of the Utah Men's Tennis Team, following F.D. Robbins' 28 years of exemplary service to the program. With a fresh group of seniors and a solid recru ng class, Brateanu has a posi ve outlook about his inaugural season as head coach. "This year we obviously have to rebuild a li le bit," confirms Breateanu. "We lost six players from last year and half of our star ng lineup. Any me there is a coaching change, it is always interes ng to see how a group of players handle that change, but I think everything has been real posi ve. We have made tremendous improvements this fall and we will make up for the lack of experience, with a lot of hard work and excitement. It has been a lot of fun to work with the guys and I'm honored to coach such a hard working group of young men. We signed a spectacular recrui ng class and we have laid the founda on for a very successful future." Despite the loss of three varsity players that bolstered the Utes' lineup in a stellar 15-9 record last season, Brateanu is confident that his seniors this year will contend for top posi ons. "I think we can look back at a successful fall," relates Brateanu. "We obviously missed Slim Hamza and Parker McGuiness the en re fall, but it also allowed some other guys to step up. Cedric Willems had an outstanding fall, reaching the finals of our Utah Intercollegiate Tournament and the semifinals of the ITA Mountain Regionals. Ma Cowley showed flashes of brilliance and Johan Jonhagen, Louis-Philippe Gascon and San ago Sierra have proven that they have the poten al to be real difference makers for our program for the next four years." Senior Slim Hamza did not compete during the fall season due to injury, but compiled a 13-8 overall record last season from the No. 1 singles posi on, while going 11-11 from the top doubles posi on with fellow senior Cedric Willems. Last year, the Tunisia na ve was named to the second team All-Pac-12 Conference for a third consecu ve year, as well as an All-Academic honoroable men on. He is also Utah's only two- me Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week. "Slim is one of the most dangerous players in the country, who has proven that he can beat anyone at any given me," says Brateanu. "Obviously he has missed the en re fall with a nagging knee injury, but we are excited to have him back and need to give him some me to get him back to one-hundred percent. He has the poten al to become an All-American." Willems proved himself a valuable asset in Utah's fall season when he made his way to the main draw semifinal round of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. Brateanu sees the most off-season improvement in Willems and expects him to be a key player this year. "From the en re team, Cedric has improved the most this past fall," states Brateanu. "He has really bought into our program and understands what we expect from him. Most importantly, he has proven to himself that he can play with and beat the best players in our region and become a real leader for this team. I expect him to play very high in the lineup this year." With several victories during the fall season under his belt, senior Jus n Archer will provide depth in Utah's lineup, as well as much needed excitement for his teammates. "Besides his talents on the court, Jus n's biggest asset is his fire and passion for the team," Breateanu explains. "His excitement resonates with his teammates and he can really fire the guys up." In the middle of the lineup sits Utah's two juniors, Ma Cowley, who returns to the squad a er serving a two-year LDS mission, and Idaho State transfer Jamey Swiggart. Last season, Cowley ne ed a 13-6 singles record, seeing ac on mostly at the No. 6 spot. However, Brateanu expects Cowley to be at his best in both singles and doubles matches. "Ma is probably one of our most talented and explosive athletes, who has been in our program since the Mountain West Conference days," recalls Brateanu. "His offensive game style makes him a dangerous player in both singles and doubles. I expect him to show some maturity and take some ownership of this team this year." In his two years at Idaho State, Swiggart amassed a 25-10 singles record and was named the team's MVP, ISU's Tennis Player of the year, as well as a spot on the Big Sky All-Conference Second Team. "Jamey transferred to our program a er two successful years at Idaho State. He is a self-made man, intelligent, hard working , who has improved tremendously over the past few months. His offensive style allows him to compete for spots in both the singles and the doubles line up," Brateanu says. Utah's only sophomore Parker McGuiness joins the Utes a er playing at North Carolina State for one season where he finished with a 6-4 mark in singles and a 5-3 ledger in doubles. Under the command of Brateanu, McGuiness will ba le for a spot in the middle of the singles lineup. "Parker brings a wealth of experience in junior tennis from a very strong Texas sec on," states Brateanu. "Unfortunately, he missed almost all fall prac ce due to a heel injury, but a healthy Parker should be able to compete for a spot in the middle of the singles line up. He has a strong serve and a solid baseline game, with lots of room for improvement." Besides a solid group of upperclassmen, Brateanu is also excited to work with a great set of talented freshman, including Louis-Philippe Gascon, San ago Sierra, and Johan Jonhagen. "LP is a great athlete to work with," Brateanu says. "He's smart, organized and loves the game of tennis. He has made great strides in our program over the last 18 months and is ready to compete for a spot in the singles line up. Regardless of where he ends up in the line up this year, he is going to have a very bright future in our program and we are excited to con nue to work with him for the next three and a half years." "San is a very mature and level headed freshman," says Brateanu. "He is a great listener and a very, very hard worker. He is a very pa ent base liner, who will win a lot of matches for the Utes in both singles and doubles over the next four years." "JJ is a fun and excited guy to be around. He's full of energy and a very good teammate. Even though he has a lot of maturing to do, he is a very good athlete with a good understanding of his body. He has made tremendous strides in his game this fall and is star ng to understand what we want him to do. His speed and his forehand are his weapons. The sky is the limit for JJ," states Brateanu. Brateanu was also added two newcomers to the Ute roster for the spring dual-match season, including Bri sh standout Freddie McGeehan and Aydin Tasevac, younger brother of former Ute Ben Tasevac. Hailing from London, England, McGeehan has a 12-9 record on the ITF Junior Tour and a world ranking of 465, with a semifinal singles appearance in the ITF event in Abu Dabi (2014) and a doubles finals appearance in the Armenia ITF (2014). At one point he was the fi h-highest ranked Bri sh player in the world under the age of 17. "Freddie has just joined our program this spring and is a real athlete, who loves the game of tennis," Brateanu says. "He is a great team guy, who will bite your arm off to win. His hunger and energy will be a driving force behind our team's efforts this year." "Aydin walked unto our team this spring and brings a lot of raw talent. In many ways he reminds me of his brother Ben when he joined the team four years ago. He is a great, strong athlete with a lot of raw power. He will be redshir ng for us this year, but that will allow us to polish his game," Brateanu explains. With a talented group of players, both experience and up-and-coming, the team's strength of schedule will be a challenge for Brateanu he accepts with open arms. "I've said it before and I will con nue to repeat it throughout the year; whether we finish top 10 or top 100 in the na on, our success isn't going to be measured by our wins and losses," says Brateanu. "We have one of the strongest schedules in the na on for any team in any sport, when we play teams who have won a combined 61 na onal championships. From the get go, we have focused on the process and about improving our level of play. We win or lose every day in prac ce and it's a great learning experience for our young guys to play such a tough schedule. I'm excited to see how we measure up against all of our opponents this year. We pride ourselves in our hard work and dedica on day in and day out. If we can con nue to bring that a tude on a daily basis again, we can have a real special season."
