Description Hamlet is literature's most cryptic and alluring protagonist. After nearly four centuries of literary criticism, scholars still search for the one clue that will unravel the enigma of the ill-fated prince. Hamlet has been examined from a myriad of different approaches. In this century, Freud and a host of psychiatrists probed Hamlet's subconscious in the hope of discovering feasible psychological solutions to the protagonist's perplexing behavior. The modern day critic; approaches Hamlet with justifiable reverence, hoping to unveil a modicum of new insight. However, the same deeply-rooted complexity and mystery that elicited previous criticism, continues to magnetize the critic and casual reader alike. Hamlet is a tragedy that transcends the confines of the dramatic genre.
