Subject Optic Neuropathy; Vascular Disorders; Visual Fields
Description Optic neuropathy resulting from carotid (ICA) compression of the optic nerve anterior to the chiasm and the cavernous sinus is rare (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of asymptomatic patients have shown that contact between the ICA and optic nerve at this location without optic neuropathy is in fact common. (2) When pathologic compression occurs, retrospective case reviews suggest that it can mimic normal tension glaucoma (1, 5).
