Title Facial expression in detection of deception: Looking at the face of a lie
Date 1988-08
Year graduated 1988
Description Eye movement during deception was investigated using 120 videotapes of subjects being interrogated after having been involved in a laboratory mock crime. Half of the subjects were guilty of the mock theft and half were innocent. The tapes were analyzed for upper facial actions that might reflect attempts to disengage from the interrogator. The facial action units of eyeblinks, eye closure, looking down, and looking away were analyzed. Head-shaking was also noted. These were analyzed and recorded for presence and duration, and none of these facial actions reliably distinguished deceptive from truthful subjects.
