The color yellow in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

I will discuss the history, physical characteristics, color theory, and symbolism of the color yellow, followed by a discussion of yellow in medicine: as treatment, as a token of disease, and as indicative of mental illness and intelligence. My proposal is that yellow is a structural, thematic connector in Crime and Punishment, representing aspects of Raskolnikov's character and linking him to the other main characters in the book. Further, I suggest that yellow is not only a structural, but a philosophical connector as well, representing the dark, or human, side of human beings in the novel.
