Title Issues concerning American involvement in Japan's society of industry: help or hindrance?
Date 1998-06
Year graduated 1998
Description The Japanese have had a goal of "full employment" through industrialization since World War II. In order to improve the nation's competitive posture, they imported technology from the west - primarily from the US - as the Japanese government focused on strengthening the nation's Society of Industry. Utilizing the literature in several disciplines, this paper addresses the question o f what are the advantages and disadvantages of American involvement in Japan's Society of Industry. After examining the history of building the Japanese economy before and after World War II, this paper will discuss the various manifestations by which the United States has influenced Japanese industry. Further, this paper will review the effects of the recommendations presented by industrial experts such as W. Edwards Deming and Joseph M. Jurant, who were instrumental in rebuilding the Japanese economy after World War II. In order to demonstrate evidence of modem US influence in Japan's business and technology, much of this study will analyze some of the direct research experiences of the author while interning in the Japanese industrial society. Personal observations, analysis and conclusions will be discussed. Finally, a subjective experimental study of Japanese employees' response to American (foreign) interaction in the workplace will be examined, upon which generalized conclusions will be formed.
