Title Mountain Meadows landscape
Identifier 034gp.tif
Subject Mountain Meadow (Utah)--Photographs; Mountain Meadows Massacre, Utah, 1857
Description Upper view looking east. 1. The Monument. The camera is placed on top of the small basalt hill from which, at close range, seven were killed on the first fire, Tuesday at dawn. The emigrants were camped this side of the present monument. The spring is very close to and beyond a few feet from the monument. 2. On a side hill Nephi Johnson watched the slaughter. 3.. The present road runs behind this hill. 4. Close by some such clump of oak brush the Indian boy Albert sat, eyes riveted on the scene. The Dunlap sisters ran to him, and were directed to seek refuge in the close-by thicket. (This exact location is assumed.) 5. "Massacre Hill." Lee says his two wagons went to the left of it; it is supposed the column of march was to the right of it, and from its top John M. Higbee shouted the command, "Halt! Do your duty!" Lower view looking northeast. 3. The present road skirts this hill. 5. Another view of "Massare Hill." 7. The Burgess or Lytel Ranch. The column of march of the women and children, and men in the rear passed by the side of "Massacre Hill."
