Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

Burton C.J. Wheatlake, a successful businessman from Salt Lake City, graduate of Westminster College, and a member of the Westminster College Board of Trustees for 35 years. He agreed to be an interim president for 4 months in 1952 while a presidential search was made to replace out-going President Robert D. Steele. In 1998, Burton K. Wheatlake established the Dr. Burton C.J. Wheatlake Endowed Scholarship at Westminster College in memory of his father.

J. Richard Palmer, 7th president (1953-1956), broke the tradition of hiring Presybterian ministers; Palmer came to the college from Denver, Colorado, where he was serving as a Methodist minister. July 1952 he accepted the invitation to become the 6th president of Westminster College (Salt Lake City, Utah). He assumed responsibilities September 1, 1952 and served his term from 1952–1956. During his term, President Palmer worked hard to stabilize Westminster College's financial situation. The Student Lounge located in the basement of the gymnasium, of which he was very proud, was dedicated during his term. The first summer school was held in 1955, also while he was president.
