Show This photograph depicts Miss Sarah Louisa Conklin and her school children posing against the wall of a brick building (probably the schoolhouse) with two large windows and a tiny portion of anther window showing at far right. The children are lined against the wall in semi-double file with Miss Conklin standing behind the children in the center. The children are dressed in an array of clothing which consists of dresses, skirts, blouses, hosiery, sweaters, shirts, sweaters, pants, overalls, and a few coats. Miss Conklin is a wearing a dark colored dress beneath a dark colored shoal and has her hair pulled to the back of her head. |

This photograph is in good condition. The front right edge depicts the developmental paper the photograph was developed on. There is a white inscription which reads backward the following: "Eastman Kodak 120". Another noticeable flaw on the front is a white border around the actual photograph that appears to be again the result of the developmental process. On the back is written in pencil, "G-4 St. George [,] Miss Conklin and her school. 59 now [;] All Mormon children." Stamped in black ink is, " [?] St. George, Utah." Sarah Louisa Conklin came to St. George in 1913 as a Presbyterian schoolteacher and missionary. It was around this time the Presbyterian Church focused more on education than proselytizing for converting Mormons to Christianity. Conklin melded into the Mormon community by teaching large classes in her school and administering aid to those who were sick or in need of comfort alongside the Mormon Relief Society. She retired from teaching and missionary service in 1933 and continued to serve the community until her death in 1949. The result of her death ceased Presbyterian work in the St. George community for twenty years. |
