Neuro-Ophthalmology Virtual Education Library (NOVEL) 2019 Update: North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society's Neuro-Ophthalmology Examination Techniques (NExT) and Illustrated Curriculum are Online

The Neuro-Ophthalmology Virtual Education Library (NOVEL, http://NOVEL.utah.edu) has been building collections, publishing peer-reviewed, nontraditional scholarly materials, and supporting neuro-ophthalmology education and research since 2003 (Fig. 1A). The collaborative effort between the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) and the Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah has resulted in a collection of more than 15,000 learning objects in the form of videos, images, articles, and presentations. The NOVEL web site provides an open access interface and can be searched or browsed by specific collection. All materials submitted to NOVEL for consideration are peer-reviewed by the NANOS-NOVEL Editorial Board. This review process ensures that the learning objects published into the Library are of high quality. By requiring peer-review by an editorial board (all board certified ophthalmology or neurology NANOS members) led by Aki Kawasaki, MD, NOVEL serves as a publishing platform where scholarly output is curated for the discipline of neuro-ophthalmology. In 2017, the NOVEL web site had more than 76,000 page views from more than 20,000 visitors in 143 countries. Just over half of the visits were from international sites.
