Description Friedreich's ataxia is a crippling, deadly disease affecting 1 in 50,000 people. It kills irreplaceable cells in the heart and the spinal cord, and, sometimes, the pancreas. Its victims suffer progressive lack of coordination, and muscle weakness leading to shaky movements and difficulty walking. They slur their speech. Eventually, when enough of the heart's cells are weakened or die, the heart fails.
