Band-form of neutrophilic granulocyte (peripheral blood, human)

Electron microscopy. Transition from late metamyelocyte to band form (9-12 μm). These are the earliest stages of the motile two-lobed neutrophilic granulocytes. (1) a slightly bended nucleus with a nucleolus. (2) Golgi area. Apart from a few mitochondria (3) and profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum (4) and some glycogen a considerable amount of granules of varying sizes and densities is present. Many of the granules (5) are primary granules with spherical or ellipsoid forms ('non-specific' or light-microscopic azurophilic). They contain myeloperoxidase as an antibacterial substance but also acid hydrolases as acid phosphatase, arylsulfatase, beta glucuronidase.
