Description The prognosis for patients with ADEM varies with the causative organism. The mortality rate for ADEM after measles may be as high as 20%, and survivors frequently have major neurologic sequelae, whereas the mortality rate for postvaccination ADEM is about 10%, with survivors only rarely having neurologic sequelae. Postvaricella ADEM is associated with a 5% mortality rate and a 10% rate of major neurologic sequelae. The prognosis of ADEM that occurs after a nonspecific respiratory tract illness generally is excellent, with recovery occurring slowly over several months. Neurologic sequelae in such cases are minimal.
