One of the intriguing observations in prosopagnosic patients is that a range of physiologic and behavioral techniques can show that these patients retain some unconscious ""covert recognition"" of these faces. Investigators have shown two main effects: covert familiarity, or distinguishing known from unknown faces, and covert semantic knowledge, or retained information about name, occupation, and other facts associated with a face. |
