| Description | Kawasaki disease initially was thought to be an acute but self-limited and benign disease; however, 0.10.8% of patients, mostly males, die during the acute phase of the disease. Death usually is caused by myocardial infarction resulting from acute thrombosis of a cardiac aneurysm or rupture of a dilated coronary artery. In addition, KD in childhood may lead to significant cardiac disease later in life. Rare but significant mortality and morbidity also result from ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. |
