A cylindrical, plain weave basket with narrow strap or handle madde by the Ninam of Brazil. The beginning is a flat-bottomed plaited mat of flat reed-type material approximately 1 cm wide that creates the warp spokes as the elements rise in the side walls. An added weft element of similar material weaves through over and under the spokes to the rim. Primarily 1/1 weave with one section of 1/3 weaving on each side and 1/2 weaving on narrower side walls, possibly for design element. At the rim; the spokes are turned back and tucked in. An additional wrapped element is bound to final woven row approximately every 4-5 cm. The narrow strap is tied to the wrapped rim. From tag ; "Ninam basket (for children, for small things) 1960. |
