Update Item Information
Title Gilsonite Mine Fire at "Puck Mine"
Identifier 6742c
Subject Mining--Hydrocarbon--Gilsonite; Uintah County, Utah
Description From the June 30,1938 Vernal Express: The fire started from and unknown origin in 200 sacks of gilsonite stored at the puck mine. The melted Gilsonite ran into the shaft about 150 feet deep according to W. A. Banks, setting fire to the Gilsonite veins. Gilsonite miners from Vernal were called out when the fire spread, threating the unworked deposits. The 50 or more mine workers worked in eight hour shifts fighting the blaze amid dripping heated Gilsonite in the shafts and hillsides.
