Description Establishing the prevalence of mitochondrial disease in the population is challenging due to the extensive clinical and genetic heterogeneity observed in this group of disorders. Innovative IVF techniques to prevent the maternal transmission of pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations have been developed recently and the number of women of childbearing age who could potentially benefit from these breakthroughs in reproductive medicine need to be evaluated.
