Title Walsh & Hoyt: Halogenated Hydroxyquinolines
Creator Paul H. Phillips, MD

Subject Optic Nerve Diseases; Malnutrition; Toxicity; Optic Neuropathy; Halogenated Hydroxyquinolines
Description The halogenated hydroxyquinolines are amebacidal drugs. One of these (iodochlorhydroxyquin) was promoted in some parts of the world for preventing or treating travelers diarrhea and chronic diarrheas. In that setting, it caused a syndrome of optic neuropathy, myelopathy, and peripheral neuropathy (SMON). This is ironic, since there is no evidence that the halogenated hydroxyquinolines actually prevent travelers diarrhea. The impact on public health was significant, with over 10,000 cases documented in Japan between 1956 and 1970. SMON virtually disappeared in Japan when the use of these drugs was stopped.
