Torii, which literally translates to bird perch, is a gate usually found at the entrance to a Japanese Shinto shrine, or in some cases inside the shrine. Torii are considered the simplest way to identify a Shinto shrine. They are also sometimes found at the entrance to Japanese Buddhist temples.
