Description Recent studies using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have demonstrated reduced macular volume and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes with a history of acute optic neuritis. To the extent that macular volume captures primarily ganglion cell bodies, while RNFL thickness reflects ganglion cell axons, these parameters may be differentially affected in eyes of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), and could vary in their relation to visual function.
