Description |
Outcome measures are an essential part of the mental health system. Self-report data have been debated as to their significance in providing valid information, especially with patients diagnosed with a psychotic illness. This study focused on the feasibility of using the Outcome Questionnaire-45.1 (OQ-45.1), a self-report instrument, with an inpatient population diagnosed with schizophrenia. Scores were compared with ratings on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), a clinician assessment tool. Patient characteristics were noted to identify problems and barriers that might exist for participants and nonparticipants. Results indicated that patients had a difficult time completing the questionnaire without assistance. Length of the instrument was considered a major barrier. Agreement between patient and clinician ratings was not strong (45.8%). Recommendations included modifying the questionnaire to be shorter and more applicable to this population in an inpatient population. Self-report data are not conclusively eliminated as important to program evaluation. The value of obtaining 'subjective well-being' information should be studied further. |
