Description Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, a structural biomarker for axonal loss in the anterior visual pathways, is reduced in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). RNFL loss occurs even in the absence of acute optic neuritis, and correlates well with clinical measures of low-contrast letter acuity, a candidate visual outcome for MS trials. The purpose of this study was to determine how reductions in RNFL thickness and low-contrast letter acuity translate into self-reported declines in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in MS.
