When an artery becomes occluded, the viability of the tissue normally supplied by that vessel becomes dependent upon collateral circulation. Because the process of the atherosclerotic narrowing is usually gradual rather that abrupt, physiologic mechanisms that promote collateral flow are often able to compensate for the reduction in blood flow through a main channel. |
