Additional Information |
Image was scanned from color slide. Note: Number in caption refers to designation in book: Noh, the Classical Theatre of Japan by Donald Keene. Note: "Noh (Nō)...is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century...Noh performance is extremely codified, and regulated by the iemoto system, with an emphasis on tradition rather than innovation..."--Wikipedia. Note: "The okina mask, used only in the play Okina, is the oldest type of mask still worn. The okina mask is characterized by the kiriago (split jaw), meaning that the mask is worn in two pieces tied together with string, presumably in order to facilitate movements of the mouth. The eyebrows, cotton pasted on the wooden surface, are also peculiar to the mask..."--Noh, the Classical Theatre of Japan by Donald Keene, page 162. |
