Show NANOS NEWS 35th Annual Meeting of the North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society ( NANOS), Lake Tahoe, Nevada, February 21- 26, 2009 T he 35th Annual North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society ( NANOS) Meeting drew 375 attendees to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, from February 21 to 26, 2009. Among the attending neuro- ophthalmologists were 46 from outside North America ( United Kingdom, 9; France, 8; Australia, 5; Switzerland, 4; Israel, Korea, and Singapore, 3; Denmark, Germany, Japan, and Sweden, 2; and Belgium, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, 1). TheWalsh Meeting, traditionally held on the first day and organized superbly by Timothy J. McCulley, MD ( San Francisco, CA), produced the usual wild and crazy cases ( 19) enhanced with trenchant and witty commentary by invited neuroradiologist Christine M. Glastonbury, MBBS and neuropathologist Andrew W. Bollen, MD, DMV, both of the University of California- San Francisco ( UCSF). The winner of the prize for best Walsh presentation by a fellow was Sashank Prasad, MD, University of Pennsylvania, for his presentation: ‘‘ Hear No Evil, See No Evil,'' which turned out to be MELAS ( mitochondrial encephalopathy lactic acidosis with stroke- like episodes). Divya Aggarwal, MD, Doheny Eye Institute, won the award for the best platform presentation by a fellow for ‘‘ Melanopsin Retinal Ganglion Cells: A New Class of Cells in Human Retina.'' There were 100 posters on view, 10 of which were chosen for a discussion moderated by Steven Galetta, MD ( Philadelphia, PA) and Lynn K. Gordon, MD, PhD ( Los Angeles, CA). Sally Chang, University of Pennsylvania, won the prize for the best poster by a medical student; her title was ‘‘ MS Functional Composite Scores with a Visual Component Added Capture Axonal Loss in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis.'' Daniel Barthelmes, MD, University of Zurich ( Switzerland), won the award for the best poster by Prem Subramanian, MD, PhD, Johns Hopkins University ( right), receives the NANOS 2009 Pilot Grant Award from Jeffrey Bennett, MD, PhD ( Denver, CO). James Sharpe, MD ( Toronto, ON) accepts the NANOS 2009 Young Investigator Award on behalf of Michael S. Salman, PhD, MRCP ( Winnipeg, MB). Zoe Williams, MD ( Rochester, NY) accepts the Fight For Sight/ NANOS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award. Mark J. The NANOS 2009 Pilot Grant Award went to Prem S. Subramanian, MD, PhD ( Baltimore, MD) for his project entitled ‘‘ Pilot Study to Measure Diplopic Fields and the Correlation of Diplopic Field Characteristics with Visual Function Quality.'' The NANOS 2009 Young Investigator Award went to Michael S. Salman, PhD, MRCP ( Winnipeg, Manitoba) for his project entitled ‘‘ Characteristics of the Cerebellar Dysplasia in Chiari Type II Malformation as Revealed by Ocular Motor Functions.'' The Fight For Sight/ NANOS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award went to Zoe ¨ Williams, MD ( Rochester, NY) for her project entitled Steven Galetta, MD ( Philadelphia, PA), Isla Williams, MD ‘‘ Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the ( Melbourne, Australia), Lynn Gordon, MD, PhD ( Los Angeles, CA), and Bradley Katz, MD, PhD ( Salt Lake City, UT). Grace Kao, MD, MPH ( Irvine, CA) and Janet Rucker, MD ( New York, NY) accept certificates as NANOS Fellows.
