Description In the past, these tumors were called ""dural endotheliomas,"" ""arachnoid fibroblastomas,"" or ""meningeal fibroblastomas."" These terms implied an understanding of the basic histogenesis of the tumor; however, it eventually became evident that the embryologic derivation of the tumor cells was far from clear. Accordingly, Cushing introduced the term ""meningioma"" to identify tumors that originate from cells of the meninges but without specifying their precise histogenesis.
