The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONIT), in many ways, has distinguished neuro-ophthalmology by setting the tenor of clinical trials in the disciplines of neuroophthalmology and Multiple Sclerosis research. What started as a questioning of treatment practices in patients with optic neuritis by Roy Beck, M.D. during his fellowship- has irrevocably altered the treatment of MS in general, in addition to stimulating the careers of several neuro-ophthalmologist clinical investigators. The Longitudinal Optic Neuritis Study (LONS) has continued to generate important key information regarding the natural history of this monophasic demyelinating event as well as information regarding the prognostic features seen in optic neuritis. |
