Description High blood pressure, or hypertension, defined by the American Heart Association as systolic blood pressure of ? 140 or diastolic blood pressure of ? 90, is a condition that affects nearly 73 million Americans. People with hypertension are at greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome than those without hypertension. Metabolic syndrome is associated with obesity, particularly extra weight around the middle of the body or visceral fat and insulin resistance. The American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute define metabolic syndrome as having three or more of five signs present in a single case. The five signs include high blood pressure, elevated fasting blood glucose, abdominal obesity, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and elevated triglycerides.
