Show This is a black and white photograph of nurses outside the Holy Cross Hospital. There are nine women nurses seated on a bench in front and ten more standing in the back. Hannah Claire Haines is standing third from the right and is wearing wireframe glasses. All the women are clothed in white hats and dresses typical of a nurse in the early 1900s. Most of the women have their hair parted and all have their hair tied up. Directly behind the nurses is a small tree with its leaves reaching just above the hats of those standing, and also what appears to be another plant behind at the left. Surrounding the group is the outside of a brick building with a wall at the left and an archway crossing behind them to another wall at the right. The wall at the right comes out towards the group a little ways but then turns and continues along towards the right, leaving an opening. Grass is at the nurses' feet and there is a dirt path at the right leading back to the arches. There are four arches in all with a tile roof starting at the top of the arches and reaching up behind them to a wall. In-between each arch is a circle right below where the roof starts. There are two windows above the roof and one high up in the left wall.

|
Further Information |
This photograph has a slight fuzzy border before its thin white margin, and is pasted onto a black piece of cardboard. A few white specks can be found on the image, and the actual photographic paper has peeled a tiny bit on the skirt of the nurse seated at the very right. Otherwise, the photograph is in good condition. In the bottom white margin of the photograph is written in ink and in cursive, "Holy Cross Hospital nurses in training[,] about 1910[,] 3rd from right, back row." On the back there is nothing written. Though there is nothing on the photograph to indicate Hannah Claire Haines is in the picture, it is written elsewhere in the scrapbook that this is a photograph of her class, and due to comparisons of other photographs of Miss Haines, she has been determined to be in this picture exactly where the description in the margin indicates. The original photograph is located in the Hannah Claire Haines Scrapbook in the Giovale Library Archives. |
