Description |
The origin of sculpture is lost in antiquity. In fact, sculpture is as old as civilization itself. The appreciation of the fine arts do not belong to the savage era of the human race as that was a period of self-preservation, although there are some evidences in caves and on weapons of carving and painting. As civilization evolved mankind acquired leisure and we find him expressing himself in the universal language of the fine arts. The idolatry of the old world stimulated sculpture in the worship of their many gods. We are told in the Bible that the Israelites were repeatedly exhorted to turn away from the worship of images and they were punished, according to the Holy Writ, because of their disobedience in this respect. Hence, in sculpture they did nothing as their religion forbade their making "graven images." |
