M. <br><br> NINTH YEAR OPENED SEPT., 3, 1883. <br> The Salt Lake Collegiate Institute entered upon its ninth year with brighter prospects than ever before. <br> CHARACTER OF THE SCHOOL. <br> The School is graded into Primary, Intermediate, Academic and Collegiate departments. Each department is under an experienced teacher of known ability and the large enrolment of last year, (240) shows that the School merits the confidence of the public. <br> HIGHER EDUCATION. <br> Through the liberality of friends in the East a regular College Department is organized. This department is in the charge of a thoroughly competent gentleman, who is principal of the School, aided by a lady as associate principal. The course of instruction in the Collegiate Department is three-fold, Normal, Scientific and Classical. <br> ACCOMODATIONS. <br> The School has a seating capacity for 225 day pupils, and the Boarding Department can accommodate, besides teachers, some 25 pupils. <br> SCHOOL YEAR. <br> The School is composed of 40 weeks, including two weeks of vacation, one at the holidays and the other in the spring, at the close of the third quarter. <br> BOARDING DEPARTMENT. <br> This department is under the control of an experienced matron. The girls are under the direct supervision of the matron and the lady teachers. The boys occupy a separate hall, and are under the direct supervision of the gentleman principal. The Superintendent has a general oversight of this Department, as well as of the Day School. <br> RATES OF TUITION, BOARD, &c. <br> Primary Tuition, per quarter…$5.00 <br> Intermediate…6.00 <br> Academic…8.00 <br> Collegiate…10.00 <br> Piano, organ or guitar…15.00 <br> Board including furnished rooms, fuel and light, $5 per week; washing, 50 cents per week. <br> No deduction made on tuition for the first two weeks of any quarter, and no pupil received for less than one quarter. <br> No deduction made for absence unless over three weeks on account of sickness. Any pupil withdrawing from School without informing the Superintendent, will be charged to the end of the quarter. <br> No student will be received from another school who is known to be in arrears in that school for tuition, or is under discipline. <br><br> NEWS. <br> Prof. Boyle will conduct a summer school, three forenoons in the week, in the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute, during the summer. Students wishing to catch up with classes, or to pursue any special branches, can be accommodated. <br> Rev. D. J. McMillan has accepted the Presidency of Deer Lodge College, and reports its outlook to be very encouraging. There are already forty applications for admission to the boarding department for next year. The Presbyterian church has done a wise thing in securing this fine property, which is now paid for in full. <br> Rev. Mr. Gillespie, from Brigham City, was in Salt Lake City, a week since. He reports unusual interest in the work, in his part of the country. The Sunday before his visit to Salt Lake, he said there was hardly standing room in his church, so great was the throng of those seeking after the truth. To use his own words, "it was just like spring time over all that valley." This certainly is encouraging when we consider that Mr. Gillespie was mobbed and his house stoned, when he first went to this stronghold of Mormonism and polygamy, and that every art that malice could devise was used to drive him out of the town. Only great courage and strong faith in God, could have carried him through the years of trial in Brigham City. <br> Mrs. Elizabeth Reamer, writing from Waterloo, New York, says with regard to our advising no lady teacher to enter on the mission work in Utah without a knowledge of music: "In wording this so strongly may you not deter some from going to Utah, who may have other most desirable qualities, etc." We do not wish to deter any one, yet the lack of this knowledge is certainly a most serious drawback, among a people so music-loving as the Mormons, even when the teacher is ever so well equipped otherwise. We could mention several instances where the missionary won his way into a bitterly hostile community, mainly by possessing musical ability and exercising it. Our teachers and ministers all bear testimony to its importance. <br> Negotiations are now pending for the purchase of the building known as the Liberal Institute and the lot on which it stands in Salt Lake City, for the use of the Presbyterian church, in enlarging its educational work here. The Woman's Executive Committee of Home Missions have generously agreed to secure and advance the money (about $8,000) necessary to complete the purchase, and put the building in repair. The ladies propose to use part of the building for a Kindergarten school, and to send out an experienced teacher from the East to conduct the same. This lot adjoins the lot on which the Collegiate Institute stands, on the north, and will make a very valuable addition to the school property, if secured. <br><br>
