Title Toward Understanding and Treating Ataxia
Creator Henry L. Paulson
Affiliation University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
Subject Polyglutamine; Expanded repeats; Cerebellum; Neurodegeneration
Description The dominantly inherited ataxias, or spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs), are progressive disorders in which the cerebellum slowly degenerates, often accompanied by degenerative changes in the brainstem and elsewhere. The number of known SCA's continues to grow, including at least 27 to date. The former neuropathological classification of hereditary ataxias (e.g. olivopontocerebellar atrophy) has given way to a genetic classification.
