Description This bacterium is a gram-positive, nonmotile, nonspore-forming rod that can replicate under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. It is found most commonly in animals in which it is usually nonpathogenic. Humans become infected when they come into contact with infected animals. Thus, occupational groups at risk for infection are farmers, slaughterhouse workers, butchers, fishmongers, veterinary workers, food handlers, and trappers. Persons who eat raw seafood or uncooked meat may also become infected.
