Tattooing is an age old art. Every major civilization has incorporated the art of tattooing in some form or another. While in many cultures it is a symbol of strength or pride in many it is used to mark people in negative ways. The existence of tattooing in our culture today has also gone through negative stages. Up to the 1980's, tattooing was viewed as an art exercised by bikers, prisoners, and prostitutes. The tattoo was used to mark this social class and was often looked down upon. Since the 1980's there has been a Tattoo Renaissance. The middle class has become interested in the art of tattooing. This interest has moved tattooing into the mainstream and has placed it in a more positive light.
