Japanese in Utah

These pictures were taken in the spring of about 1917 or 1918. Picture "B" shows the typical tar paper and frame house that comprised the smelter camp. The trees were planted by the Japanese residents tempering the desert-like environment. The car belonged to my father -- one of the first Isseis in Utah to be able to buy a car. The make is unknown but he purchased it for $1500. Picture "A" shows another view of the camp. The unique feature of this picture is the American Flag flying. I do not know why nor can I explain the extremely loyal and patriotic feeling my father had for his "adopted" country. This flag was flown on the Fourth of July in this mostly Issei camp. I can recall that after we moved away from the camp and moved to another smelter camp in Midvale (a small smelting town about 12 miles southwest of Salt Lake City) that my father continued to fly the flag on various patriotic occasions. He purchased a large one, about 7'X10', and put it up and took it down himself. My younger brother, sister and I were born in the smelter camp but my brother, being the first-born, was born in a hospital in Salt Lake City. My mother tells me that most of the Japanese children born here were delivered by the Issei women residents. Sometimes the doctor from Tooele would come out and deliver but rarely.
