Societies for promoting cultural understanding between Japan and America were established in both the United States (as "Japan-America Society of [city, state, or region]") and in Japan (as "America-Japan Society of [place])." The Meiji Centennial commemorated the Meiji Restoration (明治維新, Meiji Ishin) of 1868, when the shogunate ended in favor of imperial rule, leading to great changes in Japanese society.
