Description Joseph S. Rawlins, Bishop of the South Cottonwood Ward, along with William Boyce & Richard Maxfield, his counselors, began to make plans for a cemetery in 1872. The first actual grave was dug in 1874 for John Benbow who was among the first pioneers to enter the Salt Lake Valley.
