Description Photograph of Bunraku puppet theater in Japan
Caption on Slide Bunraku theater, Japan. Three kinds of performers take part in Bunraku: puppeteers (three men are required to operate the nearly life-size major puppets, other puppets in "bit parts" require just one man), tayū (chanters who provide the voices of puppets and narrate) and shamisen players (three-stringed musical instrument). Puppets have detachable heads, arms, and legs. A puppet's head has strings to operate the eyes, mouth, and eyebrows.
