(From the Cache Valley Chapter of the Utah State Historical Society) March 25, 1947. THE STONE HOUSE OF JUDGE JOSEPH HOLBROOK. THE FOLLOWING IS A SHORT ACCOUNT REGARDING THE STONE OR ROCK HOUSE BUILT BY JUDGE JOSEPH HOLBROOK, PIONEER OF 1848. He built it to accommodate his large family that they may live commodiously together under one roof. The building stood on the southeast corner of 1st. East and Center Street in Bountiful, Utah. The following is taken from his personal diary. ""In the spring of 1860 commenced to dig the cellar or basement for the stone house, size 96 ft. long. The main building 48 ft. by 33 ft. The south wing 22 ft. by 21 ft. with stoop on each side. I commenced the walls of the cellar. Laid up the basement story the first season and some of the second 1861. The building was ready for the roof in 1863 with material also on hand for the same when a terrible east wind of that year unroofed the Meeting House and Judge Holbook loaned this material to the ward that the Meeting House could be reroofed. The stone house was later finished by a committee in 1869, where the school of science was held along with dancing and theaters. The building, with 7 rods square of ground on which it stood, was turned over to the committee and he was credited with $4500.00 in stock and he also subscribed for $300.00 worth more. He was president of the company. The house was never occupied by himself and family and it was torn down in 1902. I drew the picture of the building in the year 1895 while attending the district school as part of my art lesson.
