Title |
Current banking and economic problems |
Description |
Transcript (13 pages plus 6 pages of tables and graphs) of an extemporaneous speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Marriner S. Eccles at the 57th annual convention of the Texas Bankers Association in Houston, Texas, on 18 May 1939. Also scans of letters to and from Eccles related to the speech, including early correspondence arranging for his attendance. These include several invitations for Eccles to visit individual banks or individuals, which Eccles had to decline due to his schedule. Also letters from after the event, including requests for Eccles to send a corrected copy of his speech. In a letter dated June 16, 1939, Elliott Thurston, assistant to Mr. Eccles, conveyed that the speech was meant to be "off the record," and that the transcript "is a pretty badly garbled account… it just doesn't make sense, and the Chairman is very certain that he was misunderstood…" Also a list of attendees at the session when Mr. Eccles spoke. |
