Description Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is the most common manifestation of CMV disease in persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Reactivation of the virus in these patients typically occurs in those with a CD4+ count of < 50 cells/mm^3. Symptoms often include visual field defects, decreased visual acuity, and blindness that begins unilaterally but may progress to bilateral ocular involvement. On ophthalmologic examination, characteristic yellow-white lesions with or without retinal hemorrhages can be seen.
