Description |
Interest in serum factors and responses to infection dates back to at least 1906, when Wasserman developed a complement fixation test for syphilis (see Handout 1 - History). These studies were later refined to flocculation tests, (1930) treponeme immobilization tests (1949) and immunoassays. Then it became clear that there was such a phenomenon as a 'biologically false-positive serum test for syphilis (BFP-STS' in some patients with pregnancy, infections, toxins and systemic diseases, such as lupus ( see Handout 2- Different Types of Anti-phospholipid Antibodies). |
