Description This presentation is meant to focus on two issues: (1) The use of ultrasound to detect emboli and (2) the practical application of this diagnostic modality to support a major research program on Neuro-Ophthalmologic, Neurologic and Neuropsy chologic outcome following cardio-pulmonary bypass surgery. First why is important to know that emboli are the cause of neurologic deficits? From the clinical side ther e are practical therapeutic implications, from the basic scie nce side, the pathophysiology of cerebral deficits become better understood and neuro-protective strategies may achieve a realistic rationale and point the way to further expe experimental therapeutic intervention.
