Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

Samuel Culver Park (1869-1920), a former mayor and prominent businessman of Salt Lake City, was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and came with his family to Salt Lake City in 1871. Samuel took a job as a cashier at the Bank of Commerce in 1894. He later became president of the Boyd Park Jewelry Company in Salt Lake City. In 1903, he won election to the Utah State Senate where he served until 1907. He served during the same period in the Utah National Guard from which he retired as a brigadier general in 1908.

In 1909 Park became a member of the Board of Education in Salt Lake City. During his second term he resigned to accept the nomination for Salt Lake City mayor and was elected in 1911 (served 1912-1915). While a lifetime Republican Park ran on a non-partisan businessman's ticket which drew support from all parties. He was the first mayor elected under the new commission form of government and as such also served as commissioner of public safety and had jurisdiction over the police, fire and health departments. He did much to reorganize these agencies along metropolitan lines.
