This photograph is a copy of the original and is in fairly good condition, though is slightly blurry. On the back of the photo, inscribed in pen, is: "George Beaty Sweazey," "George Beaty Sweazey," "1914-1917". There is also yellow adhesive brushed onto the back of the photo. Sweazey served as the Dean of Westminster College from 1914 to 1917. He was born on April 12, 1875 in Switzerland County, Indiana. He received an A.B. and an M.A. from Wabash College, was a graduate student at the University of Utah, University of California, and University of Chicago, and received an L.L.D. from Parsons College. Before serving as the Dean of Westminster College he was an instructor at Sheldon Jackson College (Westminster College) for a year and then took a leave of absence to study Chemistry at the University of Bonn in Germany. Upon returning, he became the Principal of and a teacher at the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute-a Westminster affiliate-and continued his career as an instructor at Westminster College. In 1917, Sweazey resigned as Dean to the great regret of the entire Westminster community. He went on to serve as a Professor and the Dean at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Sweazey, who was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, died on August 10, 1946 due to complications during surgery. |
