Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah was chartered in 1895 under the name Sheldon Jackson College. General John Eaton was the first and only person to serve as the president of Sheldon Jackson College (from 1895-1901). The college opened in 1897 on the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute campus and held one commencement under that name on June 4, 1901. The Trustees approved a name change to "Westminster College" in February 6, 1902. Frank E. Duddy, Jr., the 7th president (1956-1963) was the school's first non-ministerial president. W. Fred Arbogast, 8th president (1963-1968) was a Westminster alumnus and the former principal of East High and Highland High School in Salt Lake City. He held graduate degrees from the University of Denver and University of Utah. His term included the addition of the first free-standing library on campus, Nightingale Hall. He died in July, 1984 Manford Shaw, 9th president (1968-1976), was a Westminster graduate and earned degrees from Yale and the University of Utah. He was also a college trustee. His term saw a much needed Union Building and Malouf Hall added to campus. Helmut P. Hofmann, 10th president (1976-1979), had a Ph.D. from Heidelberg University, Germany and had been the Academic Vice-President at both Weber State in Ogden, Utah and at Westminster College before being chosen as Westminster president in 1976. Bonneville on the Hill is an historic neighborhood near Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City. R. Gordon Bader was President of the Bonneville on the Hill Co., with offices at 220 Kearns Building, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101. Malmsten Amphitheater was built in 1972 under President Manford A. Shaw (1968 to 1976). The Amphitheater, named for Salina E. Malmsten, provides a quiet, shady area on the north side of Emigration Creek that includes a concrete stage area and bench seating for concerts, performances and other gatherings up to 800 people. Malouf Hall, dedicated September 12, 1974 during President Manford Shaw's term, is named for long time friends of the college, Mrs. Mima A. and Mr. Anees (Anis) B. Malouf. The lower level of Malouf Hall houses the School of Education, while the upper level contains classrooms and faculty offices. The couple also created the Anis B. and Mima Malouf Endowed Scholarship at the American University of Beirut. John Harvey Mangum (1933-2012) attended the University of Utah, served a mission in the North Central States, and then completed college at Brigham Young University. He received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington in 1963. Mangum accepted a position on the biochemistry faculty at Brigham Young University, where he taught and conducted research until his retirement. Paul Miller (1906-1991) was Chairman of the Board of Gannett Company newspaper chain. Born in Diamond, Missouri, Miller joined Gannett in 1947, and succeeded the founder, Frank E. Gannett, in 1957 as president and CEO of the chain. He was elected president of The Associated Press in 1963. Miller retired as chairman of Gannett in 1978, then the largest newspaper group in the United States. Sources of this historical note:
Content Description +/-This small collection consists of records created and/or collected by the President's Office relating to investments made between 1961 and 1977 by Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. During the period these records were maintained, the following presidents were in office: Frank E. Duddy, Jr., W. Fred Arbogast, Manford A. Shaw, and Helmut P. Hofmann. The collection consists largely of correspondence of Presidents W. Fred Arbogast and Manford A. Shaw. The materials also include stock certificates, as well as other financial records related to building funds and charitable donations.
